Strong Advice Against Disclosure of Your TEL Domain Username and Password on Third Parties Services

I could observe in last few months, that a trend has developed and some developers ask TEL domain owners for username and password and blatantly abuse their privacy.

Following websites will ask you for your TEL domain username and password, although they are not connected with TELNIC as registry. Some of them don't even offer secure website connection. They disclaim all liability if your username and password is wrongly used. You will never know who has abused your password.

Such is also this service: http://www.dtsanalyzer.com/ --as they don't ask you to compromise your username and password.

Why some of those websites asks for your passwords?

Complain to Privacy Commissioner, Canada

The reason behind those irresponsible companies asking for your passwords is greediness. They are more interested in the money rather then in your privacy.

If they can get US $10 on advertising, they will not care of your password being transferred over insecure connection.

Further, they will often place "disclaimers" disclaiming all liabilities and their responsibilities for the loss or abuse of your passwords or your TEL domains.

Do you really wanna trust such websites?

Some of those websites are in Canada. If you find a website abusing your passwords, complain to the Privacy Commissioner in Canada.

Don't reveal your usernames and passwords to third parties

Complain to Better Business Bureau in U.S. for U.S. Websites

We cannot know why TELNIC vouches for such services: http://telnic.org/tools-other.html

Your information can be compromised by other people cracking into their systems. Or by them, third party providers. Who are they?

Even if the provider claims to be "trusted", you as a domain name owner cannot know "who is the provider", "where is he", "how many people work with him", so you cannot know how many people actually have access to your private username and password.

You might be in breach of agreement with your registrar or your company, by giving out passwords.

It is similar like revealing username and password of your Google Mail account.

Ask yourself: would you like to give your username and password of a TEL domain just to anyone?

Ask yourself: would you like to give your username and password of a TEL domain just to anyone?

Such third party providers usually promise to "open source" their software, but until now, I could not observe any such open source. They try to earn bucks while compromising your username and password and deliberately making false statements.

What can you do?

Take Care About Your Security And Privacy

For security reasons:

1. CANCEL all such third parties' services.

2. IF YOU HAVE TO USE THEM, use them once, then change your username AND password; DO NOT USE ANY PROVIDER OFFERING UNSECURE CONNECTIONS!

3. Consider searching, asking and ordering of a software which you can run on YOUR OWN computer, without compromising your username and password..

4. Don't use same username and password on your TEL domain which you give out to such third parties, and your other TEL domains or Facebook or Gmail accounts -- as third party or the cracker into their system, can misuse your password and misuse your facebook, twitter and other accounts.

DO NOT GIVE YOUR PASSWORDS TO NO THIRD PARTY

We advise strongly AGAINST disclosure of your username and password to third party services, not connected with TELNIC.

A third party provider for TEL domains which asks you EVER for username and password, is not interested in service TO YOU, but in service FOR HIM/HER. If he would be interested for a service TO YOU -- you would be getting FREE OR PAID SOFTWARE; which you run yourself on your computer without compromising your username and password.

It is a long Internet practice to KEEP YOUR USERNAME / PASSWORD SECRET. Small business companies CANNOT SIMPLY afford the true security of usernames and passwords, due to a limited knowledge and resources.

Providing a third party system which asks for username and password of number of TEL domain owners, over UNSECURED CHANNEL is utterly irresponsible. Such third parties are interested more in a few bucks which they get from advertising, rather than in securing your privacy and making sure that your username and password is not revealed over UNSECURED channel. Finally, a SECURED CHANNEL cost them at least US $30 -- that much is YOUR USERNAME/PASSWORD NOT WORTH TO THEM.

And other software developers will soon release new software which you can run on your desktop computer or mobile devices, that you can control your TEL domains without compromising your username and password. One such software for mobile devices is: http://telnic.org/tools-iphone-mytel.html -- it will not compromise your username and password.

Similar software will soon appear on various Internet websites, watch http://freshmeat.net and http://sourceforge.net for new software to appear.
